Chicken Road started as a small board game night among friends in a rented basement. Founders Mark and Lisa, both passionate gamers with backgrounds in hospitality, noticed a lack of dedicated spaces for gaming communities in the area. What began as casual weekly gatherings quickly grew as friends brought friends, and the original group of eight expanded to over thirty regular attendees in just a few months.
After securing funding from fellow gaming enthusiasts and taking out a small business loan, Mark and Lisa opened the first official Chicken Road location in April 2019. The 1,200 square foot space featured 10 gaming tables, a modest collection of 25 board games, and 5 gaming PCs. The café portion offered simple snacks and drinks. Despite limited marketing, word-of-mouth brought in curious visitors, and the unique pay-by-time anti-café model proved popular among students and young professionals.
Following our unexpected success and growing community, we moved to our current 3,500 square foot location in the heart of downtown. The expansion allowed us to increase our PC gaming stations to 20, expand our board game library to over 50 titles, and create dedicated spaces for different types of gaming experiences. We also established our now-famous kitchen, serving gaming-themed food and specialty drinks that have become almost as popular as our games.
As our community continued to grow, we shifted our focus to creating more structured community programs. We launched our membership program, began hosting regular tournaments with cash prizes, and established partnerships with local schools to provide educational gaming experiences. Our "Gaming for Good" charity events raised over $15,000 for various causes, cementing our place as a community-focused business rather than just a gaming venue.
Today, Chicken Road stands as a beloved institution in our city's gaming and social scene. With over 5,000 registered members, weekly events that consistently sell out, and a vibrant online community, we've created something special that goes beyond gaming. As we look to the future, we're exploring opportunities for a second location and continuously expanding our offerings to meet the evolving needs of our diverse community.

A lifelong board game enthusiast with a collection of over 200 games at home, Mark brings his passion and encyclopedic knowledge to Chicken Road. He specializes in strategic games and can recommend the perfect game based on your interests and experience level.
